Grimgal of Ashes and Illusion
Hey, thanks for scrolling down all this way!
Hi, person! hikaslap here. The below post was written by TOM way back in October 2014 when we first started this project. Circumstances led him to decide that he didn’t want to say anything anymore, besides his translation, and he enlisted me as his mouthpiece! Can you believe it?
He’s quite as much a mystery to me as he is to the rest of us, so I treasure this post. Why? Because behold, the one and only non-fiction thing TOM has ever written. This, my friends, is the story of an adventure born from the ashes. lol not really, but yeah—
“Hai to Gensou no Grimgal” draws its inspiration from classic J-RPGs such as Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Romancing Saga, Suikoden, Star Ocean, Xenogears, and many others. Those who are familiar with RPGs coming out of Japan when the Playstation 2 was the king of videogame consoles will immediately find themselves on familiar footing.
That being said, recently there has been a rise in popularity of series such as Sword Art Online, which also takes place in a world patterned on MMO RPGs. Series such as SAO are defined by characters who are genius fighters and can cut down anyone in their way without much preparation or training.
Grimgal purposely seeks to rebuff this idea by introducing characters who must, quite literally, earn their way in the world. Following the development of these characters; their laughter and tears, triumphs and defeats, and perhaps most importantly, their relationship with one another other, is a major aspect of the story.
Author: Ao Jyumonji
Illustrator: Eiri Shirai
Credits to NanoDesu and the ND staff for making this release possible and a heartfelt thanks to Team Grimgal (hikaslap, msirp, and castor212) for all their hard work on this project!
One more for my RPG/Novel crossover list. :3

I have terrible mixed feeling I get when I really want to see more of something, but understand that getting it with the quality and the speed I’m getting it is already a luxury
Either way, thanks a lot for the work, hope you keep on it, because I’m really loving this novel’s approach to the topic, and the MC’s job is truly icing on the cake of its originality, gotta love the JRPG feel it has too, MMO are great and all, but the clasic turn based games are truly timeless classics after all, I can’t wait to learn what new skills each class will show, or if there are other classes specific to other kingdoms and countries.
No spoiler though, please. 🙂
